The 2008 Banquet

The 94th Barton High School Alumni Banquet evening began with greetings from Donna Kyle Churchill, President. The Invocation was sung by all the members and dinner was served. The Barton Firemans's Auxiliary prepared a delicious dinner of Roast Beef with all the trimmings. Serving our dinner again this year was the Kathy McKenzie team. A donation is given to her team who walk in the memory of her father in the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life. One Hundred & forty-nine members were in a attendance and the firehall was decorated with red and white balloons and red and white carnations. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and approved as read.

A memorial service was held for the twenty-two members who died this past year. A candle was lit for each member when their name was read. Vicky Symons Burt sang, “How Great Thou Art”.

We recognized our 50-year members (class of 1958). The 7 members present were introduced and a poem “How to Stay Young and Happy!” was read. Before the roll call of classes, 2 people from the class of 1937 sent their regards. They were Shirley Gattens Donahue and Victor Metz. The roll call of classes began with the year 1928 and went up to 2008. We had one person attend from the 2008 class. We recognized our guests Fay Smith (our last remaining cook from Barton) and her husband Kenny. Our guest speaker was Jason Mowbray (Fire Deputy Chief). Emily Hyde told a joke. Carolyn Harvey Becker read a poem that she wrote about Evelyn Hyde George who is 90 and is retiring from doing hair. During the 1st part of our business meeting, we presented flowers to Norma Shaw Nelson for her dedication to the Alumni for over 10 years. She has always gotten our booklets made for us. She is retiring from the school system.

The last item of business was to elect 5 officers for the next 2 years. It was explained that we meet one time a month, in February, March, April and twice in May for about 1 hour to plan for the banquet. Meetings are always published in the paper and on the website and they are open to all alumni members to come and help and give input.

I (Donna Kyle-Churchill; President) also told the group at the dinner that out of the 6 meetings this year, there were only 6 to 8 people in attendance and that only 5 people worked to set up the tables and prepare everything on Friday. I also stated that I know this isn't new because I grew up listening to my parents who held positions in this organization trying to get people to help out and now for 28 years that I have been coming to this banquet and the 3 years I have been president, I have experienced the difficulty of getting help and positions filled first hand. I also told that before this evening started, I spoke to a few members, trying to convince them to take an officer's position but “no” was the answer I received, or “I've been there, done that”, “I don't have time” etc. Well you know, I've used that last one. I don't have time either. I work full time and I too have other responsibilities, but I take the time because this is part of my heritage. It was not my high school, but my elementary school. I went to Valley High School and the Career Center, but I'm proud to say that I'm from Barton and it's an honor to belong to the Barton Alumni. I can not organize this banquet alone. So what I asked all 149 members present was this ... “If the positions are not filled and we don't get help, how is this Alumni Association going to continue ?”. So with that being said, we moved on to the election of the officers. New officers were elected and we voted to dissolve the 2nd Vice President's position.

Door prizes were given. Vicky Symons Burt led the group singing with “Oh, Barton High School”, “Barton Alumni Song”, and “God Bless America”. Benediction was given by Rev. Bill Harvey (class of 1950). Fifty-year members' pictures were taken by Nathan Symons (class of 1998). The dance began soon after with Johnny Moore and Tom Skidmore. Overall, a great time was shared by all.

Thanks to everyone for attending and to the past alumni officers and the members who helped this year to make the banquet a success.

Thank You, D.K.C.

The 2007 Banquet

The 93rd Barton High School Alumni Banquet was an enjoyable evening. The fire hall was decorated with red and white balloons and red and white carnations. One-hundred and fifty-four people were in attendance. The Barton Fireman's Auxiliary prepared a delicious dinner of Roast Beef with all the trimmings. Serving our dinner was the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” team led by Cathy McKenzie.

A memorial service was held for the deceased Alumni members of this past year. A candle was lit for each deceased member and a song was sung by Vicky Symons Burt.

We paid recognition of our 50-year members (class of 1957). There were 12 members present. We had the role call of classes and recognized one new member from the class of 1968 and one person from our 2007 graduating class. Our guest speaker for the evening was Paul (Bud) Bailey (class of 1952). Also, as one of our guests, was our last remaining cook from Barton, Fay Smith and her husband Kenny. Emily Hyde also spoke and read an article from the Cumberland Times News about the Board of Education honoring Charles Custer with his diploma for service and honorable discharge from the military.

During our business part of the meeting, the Alumni voted to begin donating the $100 (formerly given as the Barton High School Alumni Award) to George's Creek Elementary and Westmar Middle School for computer supplies. The money will be split evenly between the two schools beginning in 2008. The new By-laws were read. Donna Kyle Churchill was re-elected as President 2008 - 2009. The new web page was announced (http://www.bartonhighalumni.com).

Door prizes were given. Vicky Symons Burt led the group singing with “Oh, Barton High School”, “Barton Alumni Song”, and “God Bless America”. Benediction was given by Rev. Bill Harvey (class of 1950). Fifty-year member pictures were taken by Nathan Symons (class of 1998). The dance began soon after with “The Johnny Moore Trio”. Fun was shared by all.

This banquet would not happen if not for the Alumni Officers and a few members who give of their time ... and some overtime. I personally want to thank you for helping out and making this year's banquet a success. THANK YOU !!! - DKC.
